Cleaning and disinfecting are two different processes:
- Cleaning means physically removing germs (bacteria and viruses), dirt and grime from surfaces using a detergent and water solution. Detergents are surfactants designed to break up oil and grease when used with water. Any product labelled as a detergent is generally suitable for cleaning purposes.
- Disinfecting means using chemicals to kill germs (bacteria and viruses) on surfaces. Cleaning should always occur before disinfecting, as dirt and grime can reduce the effectiveness of disinfectants. Products containing ≥70% alcohol, quaternary ammonium compounds, chlorine bleach or oxygen bleach are suitable for use on hard surfaces — surfaces where liquids pool rather than absorb. These products will typically be labelled as disinfectants. Where uncertainty exists, manufacturers or suppliers should be contacted for product-specific advice.
A combination of cleaning and disinfection is the most effective approach for reducing the spread of infectious diseases and managing contamination risks in workplaces following an outbreak, exposure event or suspected contamination incident.
